Currie Cup Preview: Lions vs Bulls

Author: Shaun | Filed under: Currie Cup, Match Previews

Match Date: Saturday 21 September

The mighty Lions are on the bus again this weekend and they’re hitching a ride up the tar track to face off against the Bulls in Pretoria where we are expecting a “packed” Loftus Versfeld following the Bulls performance last weekend. The Lions themselves were not much better as they went down away from home to a Cheetahs team that seemed just that much more desperate for the win. So, this weekend, it is likely to be the kitchen sink amongst other things that will be thrown in what is sure to be a highly intense battle of the Highveld – make it happen!

Lions

The Lions showed big balls of steel last weekend as the returned from a half time deficit of 20 points to draw level with the Cheetahs with only 7 minutes left on the clock! But this is real life and there is no place in Currie Cup rugby for fairytales – the Cheetahs clawed a penalty in the dying minutes of the match and Riaan Smit was on hand to roundhouse kick the Lions back to JHB. A valiant effort by the visitors and you have to say that there wasn’t a whole lot that they did wrong…. in the 2nd 40 minutes. Case and point – they threw away their chances of winning in the 1st half when they were walked all over like a nightclub floor. If the Lions are looking to stake a claim in the competition this year then taking 4 points (and preferably 5) on the road is a priority and this weekend they have the perfect opportunity against a Bulls team that is sure to be suffering from dejection on one level or another. And all they need to do is…. show up for the full 80 this time!

Bulls

Al wat jy sien is die blou masjien! The Bulls are having a season to forget. Besides their string of highly unimpressive results, they suffered the indignity of failing to beat a team of 14 men on their home ground! Season ticket holders have every right to go and ask for a refund! The Bulls have plodded and fumbled their way throughout the majority of the Currie Cup season so far and it looks like there is no end in sight – what is going on up there?! If you think it’s a difficult thing to watch then you should try writing about it! The Bulls are so short of positives right now that it is nothing short of a miracle that they’re still standing! We don’t have to shout it from the rooftops anymore – the Bulls have got a lot of fixing to do and they best start now! (Warning: Selecting Bulls players in your Fantasy team could be detrimental to your performance)

Prediction

It’s a bit of a tough one to call, Currie Cup matches tend to go the way of the home team and given that the Bulls are as clueless as the Head of State it’s difficult to back them….LIONS to upset the birdcage!

Margin

Less than 7

Player Watchlist

Lions

Anthony Volmink – This guy just can’t stop scoring (5 tries this season)! Even when the Lions are not on attack he’s scoring tries and if you don’t have him in your team then get him in there now!

Marnitz Boshoff – Now that Jantjies is commanding the boot, the Lions fullback is a less viable option but that won’t stop him from his foray into the hotstepping business!

Derick Minnie – The Lions skipper has had a quite couple of weeks. We all have our bad days and it looks like the Bulls are going to have one with this guy on the park!

Bulls

Handre Pollard – Still a safe bet when it comes to a kicking flyhalf but given that he’s representing the Bulls he could be a bit of a risk.

Bjorn Basson – The Pretoria Express is back to Currie Cup duty. Give him some space and a rugby ball and he’ll bank you 5 points!

Jono Ross – With very slim pickings in amongst the Bulls forward, the Bulls captain is the pick of the moment. He bagged a 5 pointer last weekend and by wearing the cappie’s armband he’s guaranteed 80 minutes on the field!

Betting

Handicap

The Bulls get the head start and it’s a mighty 3 points! Taking the handicap bet will net you odds of 1.9 to 1 in either direction.

Result

The Lions have been handed the favourites tag and that comes with odds of 2 to 3 while backing the Bulls will earn you a solid return of 5 to 2!
